"Tee to cup" is the straight line. On holes that bend, play the distance along the fairway: you can't fly the corner on most of them.

The front nine

Hole 1 · Lakeside · Par 3 · 194 yards

A long par 3 to open, from a raised tee that sits about 23 feet above the green. A lake runs down the left side of the hole, short of the green, and a bunker waits to the right of the green. Downhill means the ball flies a little farther, so it may be one club less than the yardage suggests. Missing right leaves a bunker shot; missing well left brings the water into play.

Hole 2 · The Corner · Par 4 · 382 yards along the fairway

A dogleg right. The fairway turns sharply, by about 50 degrees, around 230 yards from the tee, with a bunker on the left at the corner. Stands of spruce and fir fill the inside of the bend on the right, so there's no cutting it. Hit to the corner, then play a mid or short iron to a green that sits slightly above you, guarded by a bunker on the left.

Hole 3 · Stillwater · Par 5 · 521 yards along the fairway

The first par 5 plays well downhill, about 60 feet from tee to green. The hole runs straight for over 400 yards, then bends right toward a green with water close by on the right and bunkers on both sides. The straight line from the tee crosses that water, so the shortcut isn't free. Most golfers will lay up and pitch in; long hitters can think about going for it in two, but a miss right is wet.

Hole 4 · Narrows · Par 4 · 315 yards

Short, flat and straight, and named for its tee shot. Fairway bunkers pinch the landing area: one close on the left around 225 yards, another on the right around 237. A long iron or fairway wood short of them leaves a wedge to a green with bunkers left and right. A driver brings both into play.

Hole 5 · Mirror · Par 3 · 139 yards

The shortest hole on the course, and all carry. Water covers the line from about 57 to 127 yards out, and sits close to the green. The tee is about 26 feet above the green, so it plays shorter than the number. There's a bunker on the right of the green. Take enough club to clear the water: short is the one miss you can't afford.

Hole 6 · Timberline · Par 4 · 417 yards along the fairway

A dogleg left that plays downhill, about 37 feet from tee to green. Spruce stands fill the inside of the bend on the left, from about 125 to 210 yards, so this is a hole for shaping the ball: a draw (for a right-hander) follows the fairway round the trees. Two fairway bunkers sit on the outside of the corner, on the right, around 240 to 255 yards. The green has a bunker on the left.

Hole 7 · Stairway · Par 5 · 493 yards along the fairway

The climb: the green is about 46 feet above the tee. The fairway kinks gently right and then left as it goes. A cluster of three bunkers on the right, around 390 to 405 yards, catches lay-ups that drift. There's another bunker to the right of the green. Uphill shots fly shorter, so take more club than usual for the approach.

Hole 8 · Chute · Par 4 · 348 yards

The tee shot goes out through a chute of spruce, with stands on both sides for the first hundred yards or so. Then the hole climbs about 30 feet to the green. There's a fairway bunker on the left around 240 yards and a bunker right of the green. The green is wide and shallow (about 37 yards across, 21 deep), so distance control matters more than direction on the approach.

Hole 9 · The Shore · Par 4 · 390 yards

A straight par 4 with water along the whole left side, from about 150 yards out to the green, roughly 20 yards off the centre line. A fairway bunker on the right around 245 yards and a bunker right of the green squeeze you toward the water. The safe miss is right, but not too far right.

The back nine

Hole 10 · Overlook · Par 4 · 405 yards

The biggest drop on the course: the tee sits about 68 feet above the green. The ball hangs in the air and runs out, so it plays much shorter than 405 yards. Two fairway bunkers sit on the left around 240 to 250 yards, and a bunker guards the left of the green. Favour the right side.

Hole 11 · Horseshoe · Par 5 · 540 yards along the fairway

The longest hole on the course, and it bends right by almost a right angle, about 230 yards out. Water lies on the right for much of the hole: inside the bend, within about 10 yards of the line of the tee shot, and on along the right after the corner. There's a bunker on the left at the corner. Trees fill the middle of the horseshoe, so although the cup is only 356 yards from the tee in a straight line, you have to go round. Two good shots past the corner leave a pitch to a green with bunkers on both sides.

Hole 12 · Ring of Sand · Par 3 · 160 yards

A flat mid-iron par 3 with a green ringed by three bunkers: one on the left, one on the right and one short right. Hit the green or bring a wedge.

Hole 13 · Temptation · Par 4 · 330 yards

A short, flat par 4 that asks a question. Water crosses the line from about 280 to 311 yards, just in front of the green, with bunkers either side of the green. Lay up short of the water and you have a short pitch. Go for it and you need about 315 yards of carry to clear it. That's the temptation.

Hole 14 · Long Reach · Par 4 · 440 yards along the fairway

The longest par 4, with a slight bend right around 250 yards. It plays about 16 feet downhill, which helps. There's only one bunker, to the right of the green, so the challenge is simply length. Two solid shots and a par is a good score.

Hole 15 · Valley · Par 3 · 205 yards

The longest par 3, played down into a valley about 33 feet below the tee. The drop takes some of the length off. A bunker sits to the left of the green; the right side is the safer miss.

Hole 16 · Gambler · Par 5 · 507 yards along the fairway

A dogleg right around 270 yards, with trees inside the corner, then a run downhill to a green that has water close by on the left and a bunker on the right. A fairway bunker on the right around 410 yards catches lay-ups. Long hitters can reach the green in two, if they'll risk the water. They call it Gambler for a reason.

Hole 17 · Two Tiers · Par 4 · 365 yards along the fairway

A dogleg right around 255 yards, playing about 20 feet uphill. Trees fill the inside of the bend, and two fairway bunkers on the right, around 205 to 230 yards, punish a tee shot that cuts too much off. The green has two levels, the back tier about 2 feet (0.6 m) higher than the front, and a bunker on the right. Land on the right tier, or face a putt up or down the step.

Hole 18 · Stonepine · Par 4 · 426 yards

The home hole is long and straight, and about level, with water down the whole right side, some 25 to 40 yards off the centre line. A fairway bunker on the left around 290 yards catches a tee shot that bails away from the water. The green has the water to its right and a bunker off its left side. The green is wide and shallow (about 42 yards across, 25 deep), so a long, straight approach is the shot to finish your round.
